Abstract The Internet offers a unique way to administer quantitative survey questionnaires. To date two methods have been widely used, these are web-site questionnaires and e-mail questionnaires. The types of sampling frames have been discussed at length (Schillewaert et al 1998), and numerous methods have been employed. This study was designed to explore the advantages and disadvantages of an e-mail questionnaire administered by using respondents selected from Internet Discussion Groups, a sampling frame which hitherto has received little attention in the published literature. (Witmer et al 1999 makes a notable contribution to this field).
